Smartphones are everything, especially when it comes to travel planning and finding your way around a foreign country. So many apps are available at the tip of your fingers, to the point where it can be rather overwhelming to find the best and most effective one. So here are 5 essential apps you need on your phone when travelling around New Zealand.
Essential New Zealand Travel Guide
Essential NZ is the official app from the 100% Pure New Zealand website, a true goldmine of information about everything the country has to offer. The app gives information about places to visits and not to miss, that you can filter by region. It also offers a ‘’Near Me” option, allowing you to see everything that is happening around you thanks to geolocalisation. Perfect to seek activities if you are in lack of inspiration.
You can also add places and activities to a Wishlist that you can then check both on the app and the website. Particularly useful for the creation of an itinerary: you just need to know what you want to do and see, and to plan your trip around your needs.
itravelNZ complements Essential NZ quite nicely in its use, since both have the same goal: listing all the touristic activities in New Zealand. With itravelNZ, you can filter regions and categories. Even though the options are sometimes quite limited, the app offers numerous recommendations for places to eat and to drink.
As you can guess with the name, CamperMate is designed with campers in mind, but can be used by many. The app offers so many options that any kind of traveller will find it useful at some point. Indeed, the map allows you to look for camping sites and other lodging, but also for things to do, for wifi hotspots, tourism centre, public bathrooms… Everything you need and want when you throw yourself into the unknown for an adventure.
The app brags about being for campers by campers. Which means you can add new items to the list on the app, as well as comment on the already existing items if needed. It allows the data base to be as up to date as possible, and thus as useful as possible.
As the saying goes, in New Zealand you can have all for season in one day, so it’s almost compulsory to have a weather app on your phone at the ready. WeatherWatch is super easy to use and only gives you all the essential info not to get lost in the data. You select the town where you are, and the app gives you the weather of the day and the forecast for the nine following days. Such a time-saving trick in the morning so you know exactly which outfit to wear for the day. (Layers. Layers are always good.)
Air New Zealand
When I’m travelling, the least paperwork, the better. Which is why I love digital plane tickets so much, no need to worry about a bunch of flying papers getting lost in your bag. Air New Zealand’s app allows you to travel with the hassle, with your boarding pass in your pocket ready to use. After all, as car- and hitchhike-friendly as New Zealand is, sometimes it’s good to hop on a cheap plane to the other island.
